Newcomers to pub trade buy freehouse in Brecon Beacons National Park

34/50683 The Butchers Arms

The Butcher’s Arms freehouse in the village of Pontsticill, situated high in the Brecon Beacons National Park overlooking the scenic route of the Brecon Mountain Railway, has been sold to newcomers to the licensed trade through the Bristol office of leading licensed property agents, Christie + Co.

Philip and Pauline Harper from Tredegar in Gwent have purchased the Butcher’s Arms from former owners, Edward Burns and Sandra Roberts, who had operated the freehouse since 2004 and are taking a break from the trade due to ill health.

Set within the beautiful Taf Fechan Valley, some six miles north of Merthyr Tydfil, just two miles from the Brecon Mountain Railway and next to the Pontsticill Reservoir, the Butcher’s Arms is ideally situated to attract the many visitors to the area. It also serving the local rural community and attracts walkers on the Taff Trail, which passes through the valley.

The Butcher’s Arms was established as a public house in the 18th Century and is approximately 250 years old. Situated at the top of a hill, with stunning views down the Valley, the substantial, detached property comprises a public bar, rear bar and 28-cover restaurant, two-bedroom owner’s accommodation, a car park and terrace to the front and a small enclosed courtyard to the rear.

Nicholas Calfe, Director of Christie + Co, comments: “The new owners, Mr and Mrs Harper, intend to concentrate on increasing the food trade at the Butcher’s Arms, which provided just 30% of turnover under the previous owners. This traditional village freehouse is ideally placed to attract the many visitors to the National Park and we wish the couple every success with their new business venture.”

The Butcher’s Arms was sold for an undisclosed figure after Christie + Co sought an asking price of £295,000 for the freehold.
