17th Century Cotswold inn to be given new lease of life by developer

34/50804 Bell and Castle

The Bell & Castle, a substantial 17th Century Cotswold inn in the village of Horsley, between Nailsworth and Stroud in Gloucestershire, has been sold to through the Bristol office of leading licensed property agents, Christie + Co.

Acting on behalf of Enterprise Inns, Christie + Co has sold the freehold to Alex Kerr from Egham in Surrey, a sympathetic developer who aims to transform the property and site into a combination of café bar, community shop and housing.

The Bell & Castle is the only public house in Horsley and is situated at The Cross, in the historic core of the village, adjacent to the church and various listed buildings. The inn occupies a site of approximately a third of an acre, including the beer garden and car park.

Nicholas Calfe, Director of Christie + Co, comments: “The sale of the Bell & Castle attracted a number of bids from licensed operators and developers alike interested in the good-sized plot. We wish Mr Kerr every success with his development project, which will see the Bell & Castle continue as a licensed premises at the heart of the community, while incorporating other uses.”

The Bell & Castle was sold for an undisclosed figure after Christie + Co sought an asking price of £375,000 for the freehold.
