Kentish Weald freehouse, The George in Bethersden, for sale
This news item was issued when the business featured was for sale. Please contact the relevant office to check on its current availability.
The George, a Grade II Listed freehouse in the charming village of Bethersden, near Ashford in the Kentish Weald, is offered for sale through the Maidstone office of leading licensed property agents, Christie + Co.
Built in 1701, The George has an idyllic setting in the heart of picturesque Betherden, prominently located on The Street - the main A28 road between the market towns of Ashford and Tenterden.
Set amidst the rolling fields and woodlands of Kent in the “Garden of England”, Bethersden is a peaceful village with weather-boarded houses characteristic of the Weald. It lies within easy reach of the coast, the picturesque villages of Pluckley and Smarden and the cathedral city of Canterbury. The village was home to Cavalier Poet Richard Lovelace who, during a jail sentence, composed the famous lines "Stone walls do not a prison make / nor iron bars a cage".
The George is a traditional village freehouse which hosts popular beer festivals during summer, is renowned for its real ale and Kent cider and is listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide.
With a characteristic Kent peg-tiled roof and half tile hung elevations, the freehouse has immense character with open fireplaces, low beamed ceilings, exposed beams and brickwork. Situated close to the church and backing onto George Field, the detached property briefly comprises a public bar, lounge and 35-cover restaurant, three-bedroom owner’s accommodation, a large beer garden, a private garden and a car park.
Matthew Smith from Christie + Co’s Maidstone office comments: “We are marketing The George on behalf of Anthony and Elaine Le Beau, who purchased the business in November 2002 and now wish to focus on family commitments.
The George has a superb reputation for beer festivals during the summer months and would ideally suit another hands-on owner who might perhaps increase the food operation, as the turnover is currently 80% wet-led.
The sale of The George offers a rare opportunity to purchase a freehold freehouse in an idyllic rural setting in the heart of the Weald of Kent.”
Christie + Co is seeking £599,000 for the freehold interest in the George Inn.
