Utopia Clubs plans new venture for former Nexum Leisure nightclub
Acting on behalf of Nexum Leisure, the nightclub operator, Christie + Co has sold the former Zanzibar nightclub in Stafford, to Walsall-based Utopia Clubs for an undisclosed sum.
Formerly a Territorial Army barracks until its development as a nightclub in 1992, the club had been part of the successful Zanzibar brand, which was first established by Springwood Leisure. The freehold property, which has capacity for 1,800 people over two levels, is to be the subject of a major programme of investment planned by the new owners.
Christie + Co Director Jon Patrick commented: “We have witnessed some excellent competitive interest resulting in several bids being tabled and sales concluded on a number of freehold nightclub assets of late which is very encouraging. The former Zanzibar was no exception, with local/regional operators seeing an opportunity to acquire a large freehold property with the potential to invest and grow the business.”
Graham Pinches, from Utopia Clubs added: “We are planning to invest £1 million in the new club, which will feature a number of different spaces to cater for various tastes and age groups. We look forward to welcoming celebrity DJs and we’re also proposing to host shows and charity dinners at the club, which will be renamed by local people, as part of a competition we’re running.”
