Set within large grounds, the Stagecoach Inn occupies a substantial two storey building, which dates back to 1460. The building was reconfigured in the mid 18th century and still retains most of its period features within the main trading areas. Formerly an old cider house which formed part of the local Berkeley Estate in the 1950s, the inn was sold to a brewery before becoming a privately owned freehouse.

Following 18 years of ownership, previous owners, David and Lynn Heenan made the decision to sell in order to pursue retirement. The husband and wife team met at The Park Hotel in Liverpool, the first hotel they both worked at together back in 1972, they married and worked together in several pubs and hotels in Shrewsbury, Port Talbot and Swansea, before finally buying their own pub, the Stagecoach Inn, in 2000. David comments, “We have had a great time for 19 years, met many new friends and seen many changes. We wish the new owners every success with their venture and leave with many fond memories. We would also like to thank Nick Calfe from Christie & Co for his endless patience in dealing with the sale.”

The Stagecoach Inn has been purchased by Danielle Long of Becket Hall Day Nursery. She comments, “After 10 successful years’ operating in Bristol city centre, Becket Hall identified a need for childcare in the Berkeley area and recognised the Stagecoach as the perfect premises. The new nursery will be operating under the name of Chapel Hill Day Nursery and will accommodate 62 children each day, open 7am to 7pm from early 2020.

“Due to the location of the premises, the nursery will be well suited to working parents commuting along the A38. With an acre of open countryside, Chapel Hill Day Nursery will be able to offer an onsite forest school, community allotment and natural, open ended play opportunities for children aged eight weeks to five years of age.”

Nicholas Calfe, Director at Christie & Co handled the sale and comments, “I’m delighted to see this deal complete. We had to wait a while for the change of use to a day nursery, but we got there in the end and I look forward to seeing Danielle making a success of her new premises.”
