Beautiful Ashburton care home sold

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has announced the sale of St Andrews House care home in Ashburton, Devon.

Formerly the rectory for St Andrews Church, St Andrews House care home sits in a highly attractive property that has benefitted from significant renovation, extension, and reconfiguration over the years. It comprises quality accommodation for up to 24 elderly clients, all in single bedrooms, 23 of which have en suite facilities. The site also boasts a two/three-bedroom annex which forms part of the main building, a staff house and a Coach House, and comes with planning permission to add a further 12 bedrooms over the ground and garden floor level.

St Andrews House occupies a prominent position on West Street near to the centre of Ashburton, Devon, and is in an area of predominantly residential properties adjacent to St Andrews Church and hall.

Previously owned by Mr Jeremy Christophers, the home was brought to market as a retirement sale. It has now been purchased by local operator, Mr Dick Wraighte, who owns two other homes – The Old School House in Plymouth and Ermington House in the village of Ermington in South Devon.

Mr Dick Wraighte comments, “I’m delighted with the acquisition of St Andrews to add to our portfolio, the location fits in with our wider development plan. Planning consents will enable us to develop the site further, providing a high-quality care environment in the wonderful historic town of Ashburton.”

Simon Harvey, Senior Director Christie & Co who handled the sale, comments, “We were delighted to have assisted the Christophers family in selling the home that they have owned and operated successfully for so many years. Best of luck to Dick and his team at Garad Care Homes for the future.

“This sale is another example of the strength that exists in the South West care home market for good quality, well run care homes. Whilst, on a wider level, we are seeing a drive towards bigger purpose-built homes, there is still a very healthy market for these attractive converted buildings, particularly in smaller market towns and ones that have been long-established and are well regarded. We continue to see appetite from a wide range of purchasers for homes of this nature as, in many cases, they are able to trade positively making them an appealing proposition for new entrants to the sector and established local operators alike.”

St Andrews House care home was sold off an asking price of £1,650,000.
