The Constitution is one of three pubs brought to the market by the Pubs of Distinction group in autumn 2019, when the owners took the decision to exit the licensed trade market to concentrate on their other business interests. The Constitution was the third acquisition for the group in 2015, after they had acquired the Dean Swift in 2010 and The Red Cow in 2011. All three establishments received extensive refurbishments to rejuvenate them into local beer houses to fit in with the company’s ethos of bringing a contemporary flavour to the traditional Great British pub.

Celebrated as one of the few remaining traditional English pubs in Camden, The Constitution was founded in 1858 and has been successfully operated as a managed house serving nearby businesses and the local community. It is a popular venue in the summer months for its extensive canal side garden which overlooks the Regent’s Canal and is also well known for its basement bar which plays host to live music and comedy events.  It has an award-winning patio terraced garden which was a finalist four times in the “Camden in Bloom” competition.

The Constitution has been acquired by Young’s who took over the lease and purchased the freehold from the landlord, Tavern Propco. Young’s were founded in 1831 and own over 200 pubs and hotels in London and the South of England. They pride themselves on the fact that no two of their pubs are the same and their award-winning design approach reflects the location in which the business is situated. They plan to close The Constitution for a short period of time whilst they undertake refurbishments to the property.

Stewart Harkness, Associate Director at Christie & Co handled the sale and comments, “We had numerous parties showing interest in this opportunity, showing that the pub market is still doing well despite the challenges in the past few years.”
