The Blackbird Inn sold to experienced operators

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co has completed on the sale of The Blackbird Inn situated in Wellington, Somerset.

Occupying a substantial two storey property which dates back to 1773, The Blackbird Inn is full of character with open fire places and exposed ceiling beams. The Blackbird’s freestanding inn sign, designed by famous local artist, Rachel Reckitt in the 1930s, was awarded a Grade II listed status by Historic England.

Benefitting from a number of extensions over the years, the inn comprises two main trading areas, the Blackbird Restaurant and adjoining bar with seating for over 100 covers altogether, six en suite letting bedrooms and a spacious beer garden with views over the paddock and neighbouring open fields. Additionally, a spacious two bedroom apartment on the first floor provides owner’s accommodation.

Having owned and operated the Blackbird Inn since 2007, previous owner, Keirsten Anderson decided to sell the business in order to pursue other interests. The Blackbird Inn has been bought by husband and wife team, Peter Welling and Yvonne Mulvihill, who also own the County Hotel in Haverfordwest, which they purchased through Christie & Co in 2016 and has been trading very well.

Peter and Yvonne plan to improve the property considerably over the coming months, enhancing and increasing the number of en suite rooms, as well as improving the bar and dining areas. The exterior will be redecorated and there are plans in place for the paddock and parking areas. Their plans for the restaurant include an emphasis on high quality, locally sourced food and making good use of the large dining gardens. Additionally, the bar and restaurant will be open all day from 11 am until late.

Peter and Yvonne comment, “We are very excited about this new venture and believe that we can create a very successful business at the Blackbird Inn, as we have done at the County Hotel Haverfordwest.”

Stephen Champion, Senior Business Agent at Christie & Co’s handled the sale and comments, “We are pleased to have brokered the sale of this well known Somerset pub on behalf of Keirsten Anderson. The Blackbird Inn has a fantastic trading position alongside the A38 which links Wellington and Taunton and we have no doubt that the new owners, Peter and Yvonne will have every success in transforming this West Country inn.”

The Blackbird Inn was sold off a guide price of £350,000.
