We spoke with Hannah Haines, Head of Healthcare Consultancy at Christie & Co, about her experience taking part in Care Home Open Week’s (CHOW) Great British Care Cycle Relay…

What is the Great British Care Cycle Relay?

Organised by Championing Social Care as part of Care Home Open Week (CHOW), the relay is a five-day monumental cycling event which aims to raise awareness of social care in the UK, bringing communities together to celebrate the incredible care services across the country.

Can you tell us a bit about your experience at last year’s relay?

I first got involved in 2024 after hearing about it on LinkedIn.

I simply signed up on the CHOW website and joined one of the rides from Berkshire to London. We visited some brilliant care homes along the way, which welcomed us warmly and provided refreshments whilst we chatted with the residents. It's a whole day event, and we took our time to make the most of our visits to the care homes and the conversations we shared.

A real highlight for me was visiting the care homes and observing the wonderful work that they do.

I wanted to take part this year, too, not just because I enjoy cycling but also because of the experience I had on the ride last year.

What’s your involvement in this year’s event?

The 2025 relay will take place between 12 and 16 June, ending in Loveday Belgravia (SW11 8QF) in London to kick-start the beginning of CHOW. Each leg of the relay will be over 100 kilometres and will see the cyclists visit a number of care facilities en route, where they can celebrate CHOW together and highlight the sector’s amazing work.

I'm expecting this year’s event to be even bigger and better than last year’s! I have the privilege of leading one of the events cycling from Brighton (Hallmark Maycroft Manor) to London (Loveday Belgravia), which will take place on the final day of the relay. We will have 30 cyclists riding 114 kilometres, which will take us straight into the opening ceremony for Care Home Open Week, which will be quite something!

What would you say to anyone thinking of getting involved?

I would definitely encourage anyone to get involved, it’s a fantastic experience.

If you are already signed up, enjoy the ride, make the most of the warm environment the care homes create, and eat the cake to fuel the cycle!
