Established in 1983 by the Strange family, Abbeywood House Care Home occupies a detached former gentleman's residence in the style of a two-storey Victorian villa that has been extended over the years. It now provides accommodation for up to 33 clients in 32 bedrooms, of which 30 have their own en suite facilities. The home is well-located on Cary Park, in one of Torquay’s most sought-after residential areas, and is within a level walk of many local amenities.
The business has been owned by Cliff and Phillippa Strange, who, after over forty years of family ownership, decided to sell to retire.
Following a confidential sales process with Simon Harvey at Christie & Co, it has been purchased by Paul Nery and the Rose Care Group, which now owns 10 homes across South Devon, with over 300 operational beds.
Cliff and Phillippa Strange, the former owners of Abbeywood House Care Home, comment, “Abbeywood House has been a major part of our lives for over 40 years, having started with a vacant Victorian villa upgraded to create six operational beds. Since then, we have extended and improved the home to its current capacity of 33 beds. We can now look forward to our retirement and send our best wishes to everyone at Abbeywood for the future.”
Paul Nery, the Owner of Rose Care Group, comments, “Abbeywood is a special home, with beautiful large rooms and a setting in one of Torquay’s most sought-after areas. We look forward to building on its strong foundations through investment in the home, the team, activities, and the care offering. Rose Care Group has spent more than a decade enhancing care across the South West, with a consistent focus on creating places where people are proud to live and work. We are excited to bring that same approach to Abbeywood”
Simon Harvey, Senior Director - Care at Christie & Co, comments, “Knowing how much of a part of their lives Abbeywood House was, we were thrilled to be instructed by Cliff and Phillippa to facilitate their retirement and identify the next custodian for the home. Having assisted Paul and his team at Rose Care Group with numerous acquisitions in the past, we are equally delighted to have once again assisted them in their growth strategy. The acquisition of Abbeywood House places them in an excellent position to further enhance the already high-quality care that they provide in the area.
“Following on from a record year of care home sales in 2025, the first quarter of 2026 has continued in much the same vein and with the pipeline of ongoing sales as strong as ever, indications are that this will continue through the remainder of this year.”
Abbeywood House Care Home was sold for an undisclosed price.
