The former Nicholas House care home in Berkshire.

Nicholas House is a 2011 purpose-built care home with 30 en suite bedrooms that sits on Lent Rise Road in Burnham, near Slough.

The care home was named after Sir Nicholas Winton, who formed the Abbeyfield Maidenhead Society in 1973. He built a sheltered housing unit in Maidenhead for eight people, and this was followed by the establishment of Winton House in 1980, providing care for 29 more people. Having created a solid financial base for the society, Nicholas House was built in 2011. Sir Nicholas maintained an active interest in the society up until he died in 2015.

In November 2025, the Trustees of Abbeyfield Maidenhead made the very difficult decision to close Nicholas House after a lengthy period of financial challenges, during which every effort was made to secure the long-term viability of the home. Christie & Co was subsequently instructed to sell the property, with the aim of another operator reopening it as a care home.

Following a sales process with Charles Phillips at Christie & Co, which attracted a great deal of interest and multiple offers from existing care home owners, the property has been purchased by Cedar House Care Home Ltd, the Directors of whom own a care home in nearby Maidenhead.

David Cager, Chair of Abbeyfield Maidenhead, comments, “Following the very tough decision to close Nicholas House, we are delighted that a buyer has been found who is looking to bring life back into the property and reopen it as a care home. We wish the new owners the greatest success with their plans. We now look forward to continuing to provide high-quality care to our remaining care home, Winton House in Windsor.”

Andrew Cohen, Director of Cedar House Care Home Ltd, comments, “This is an extremely exciting opportunity for us, and we are thrilled to have purchased such a well-built and well-presented property. There will be great synergies between this home and our other local home, and we look forward to being able to support the local community.”

Charles Phillips, Director - Care at Christie & Co, comments, “It has been a real pleasure acting for Abbeyfield Maidenhead, and we were very pleased with the level of interest this excellent property obtained. We are confident that Andrew and his team will deliver a high level of care when the business reopens, and look forward to seeing how successful the home will be.”

Nicholas House was sold for an undisclosed price.
