Tully’s has a long history of selling high-quality provisions and groceries to the local community. Originally established in 1900 by Jane Tully and her husband Andrew, the store was run by the Tully family for three generations and is well-known in the local community.

Current owners Richard and Sue Hurst took on the business in 1998 and have since continued to grow its strong reputation among the residents of Rothbury and beyond, celebrating the store’s 125th anniversary in 2025.

During their ownership, they have undertaken major refurbishment and expansion works, including doubling the shop footprint and carefully restoring the original pine panelling in the main retail area. They have transformed Tully’s, a traditional grocery, delicatessen and tearoom, into an essential hub for locals and visitors, proudly stocking a wide range of artisanal goods and ethical produce by local suppliers.

Now ready to retire after 27 years at the helm, Richard and Sue have decided to hand over the reins to a new owner, with Tully’s of Rothbury on the market with Christie & Co.

They commented, “We have always strived to acknowledge the history of the shop, whilst also developing and expanding to become a truly local, ethical and traditional establishment.

“We saw the potential in its history, its ties with producers, and the joy of connecting customers with where their food comes from. Everything we stock has been guided by our customers - not by what a supermarket dictates.

“The local community was, and is, at the heart of every decision which we make. We're proud of that. We always knew we were buying into a legacy. The Tully name matters, and now it's time for someone else to carry it forward.”

Robert O’Brien, Senior Agent at Christie & Co, added, “Tully’s of Rothbury is a rare opportunity to acquire an award-winning independent food business with a remarkable 125 year trading history. The business has built an exceptional reputation for quality, provenance, and local sourcing, supported by strong and consistent trading performance. Positioned in the heart of Rothbury, this is an ideal lifestyle business offering both immediate profitability and clear scope for further growth.”

Tully’s of Rothbury is on the market with a freehold asking price of £175,000. For more information, visit the property page here: https://www.christie.com/6411051/
