Historic Hungerford pub sold to entrepreneur
Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has announced the sale of the John O’Gaunt, a well-established leasehold pub located on Bridge Street in the heart of Hungerford.

Dating back to around 1800, the John O’Gaunt is a characterful and popular pub and restaurant, offering seating for approximately 80 covers. Known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and commitment to quality food made with locally sourced ingredients, the pub has built a loyal following among locals and visitors alike.
After owning and operating the pub for several years, Mark Genders made the decision to sell in order to relocate back to Kenya. He commented, “The John O’Gaunt has been a huge part of our lives and we’re proud of what we’ve built here. We’re delighted to be passing it on to someone who shares our passion for hospitality and community.”
The leasehold pub has been acquired by entrepreneur Rahul Sood, who brings a wealth of experience from his portfolio of businesses, which includes care homes, florists, and restaurants. Rahul shared his plans for the site, saying, “I’m excited to take on the John O’Gaunt and build on its strong foundations. We’ll be carrying out a light refurbishment, refreshing the food and drink offering, and making sure the pub continues to be a vibrant part of the local community.”
Tim Widdows, Associate Director at Christie & Co, who handled the sale, added, “We received a great deal of interest in the John O’Gaunt, with buyers recognising the fantastic potential of the business. It’s a pleasure to have helped bring together a deal that ensures the pub’s future is in safe hands.”
The John O’Gaunt leasehold was sold for an undisclosed sum.
