The Harbour Chapel

Internally, the main space is arranged beneath a full-height ceiling incorporating exposed structural timbers and impressive stained-glass windows. The property is presented in turnkey condition and is fully operational, with a capacity of up to around 120 guests and hosting weddings, events and corporate functions.

The property retains a number of original ecclesiastical features, including a feature timber pulpit and gallery balcony, as well as modern additions such as flexible seating arrangements and an integrated reception bar.

The historic building is situated in the charming coastal town of Dunbar, which is a well-connected, historic town that has year-round visitor appeal and offers a mix of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences.

With its established reputation, unique aesthetic, and limited direct competition, the property provides an excellent platform for an experienced operator to further grow revenue and capitalise on the continued strength of the events and experiential hospitality market in East Lothian.

Current owners Fiona and Ewan, who bought the property formerly known as Dunbar Methodist Church in December 2019, have decided to sell the business as they head for retirement.

They said, “Given the building’s historic significance as the oldest Methodist Church in Scotland, we wanted to restore it, and make sure it remained part of the community for generations to come.”

“The restoration required careful thought and consideration to ensure that the unique atmosphere was maintained whilst making sure that everything you would expect from a brand-new venue was incorporated. Everything that was removed, created, or reinstated was done so with care.

“This is a beautiful place that is defined by the people who pass through it and we now want to step aside and invite someone with a new passion and creative energy to take the business to another level.”

The business is being offered for sale as a going concern, and so staff and customers can be assured that the business will continue to run as usual until further notice.

Simon Watson, Senior Business Agent – Hospitality at Christie & Co, who is managing the sale process, commented, “The Harbour Chapel is a genuinely unique offering  a beautifully restored coastal venue with strong trading foundations and plenty of scope for a new operator to build on its established events business in a thriving East Lothian market.”

The Harbour Chapel is on the market leasehold with an asking price of £75,000 and an annual rent of £35,000.
