Northumberland’s historic Middleton Hall hits the market through Christie & Co

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co has brought to market the historic Middleton Hall Estate in the Northumberland countryside, with a guide price of £6 million.

Middleton Hall Estate enjoys a secluded position near Belford, just one mile from the A1, with excellent views of Holy Island and the surrounding countryside. The estate has been considerably improved over recent years yet still oozes a sense of grandeur and elegance, having retained its many period features, including opulent open spaces with high ornate ceilings, a grand stone fireplace embossed with the family crest, and a magnificent period staircase.

In addition to Middleton Hall, the estate also features five unique properties; The Folly, The Boathouse, Lake Cottage, Otters Cove and The Coach House, which offer a variety of excellent accommodation. The grounds cover almost 29 acres and include mature woodland, a stream running through the site, two lakes and a Victorian walled garden, all combining to create a sense of timeless tranquillity.

The earliest recorded history regarding the estate can be traced back to approximately 1107 and the property remained under private ownership until King Edward III claimed the land where Middleton Hall now stands.

In 1857, the estate was sold to John Towlerton Leather, who is still recognized as “The Father of Middleton,” as he expanded Middleton Hall’s boundaries by acquiring the surrounding land. Additionally, he enhanced the existing two-story farmhouse by constructing a substantial mock Tudor wing.

Following its destruction in 1915, his grandson, Colonel Gerard F.T. Leather set about reconstructing the property and the estate was passed down through the family lineage until its eventual sale to the Greenwich Hospital Trust in 1945.

David Lee, Regional Director – Hotels North at Christie & Co, who is handling the sale, comments, “ Middleton Hall Estate offers a fantastic development opportunity for a new owner. The is huge scope to develop the hall and surrounding estate into one of the premier wedding venues businesses in the North of England. Sitting in almost 29 acres the estate also has a range of unique letting properties and offers a new owner the opportunity to further develop the accommodation offer to take advantage of the country/coast location in this wonderful part of Northumberland.”
