As the first hotel to be built in the Lake District when the railway arrived in Windermere in 1847, The Windermere is one of the largest and most historic hotels in the region. It comprises 74 well-presented en suite bedrooms, many overlooking the lake, as well as two restaurant areas and a public bar, large gardens, and private car park. The hotel is situated in a prominent position on the edge of the town, just a minute’s walk from the train station, and is a popular destination for guests all year round.
The hotel has been sold to BH Group, alongside four other hotels in the South: the Burlington Hotel in Eastbourne, the Imperial Hotel in Exmouth, and the St Ives Bay Hotel and Ship & Castle Hotel, both in Cornwall.
James Routledge, CIO of BH Group, commented, “These hotels form the basis of our drive into the growing staycation market. We are excited by these opportunities and others we are currently seeing in the market.”
Graham Wilkinson, local Hotel Agent for Christie & Co, based in the Lake District, commented, “We are pleased to have worked with the vendors and purchasers to complete this acquisition of a significant and well-known Lake District hotel. It reflects the confidence in the hotel sector in Cumbria and the Lake District. BH Group pursued this hotel with vigour and we are delighted to have reached this successful outcome. We know they have very exciting plans for this hotel.”
