As well as providing postal facilities to the local community, the store also offers a strong range of everyday essentials including groceries, newspapers, chilled drinks, alcohol, and tobacco.

Situated on Front Street in Newbottle, Houghton le Spring, the store benefits from high visibility in the area and is seen as an essential service within the village. The charming, historic village is known for its eighteenth-century "age of elegance" architecture built along a tapered village green.

The store has been in the same family for 40 years and the outgoing owner, William Render, has been running the business for 28 years, but he has now decided to sell as part of a planned retirement strategy.

William said, “Our family has been in Newbottle for 40 years and hopefully leaves with a good legacy. The new owners want what is best for the village and will only make things bigger and better and I wish them all the success for the future.”

The buyer, Palanivel Kumarasamy, who currently owns five other businesses across Tyne and Wear, has strong operational knowledge and understanding of the local market.

Palanivel added, “Newbottle Foodstore & Post Office is a vital pillar of this community, and I am honoured to take the reins from William after his family’s incredible 40-year legacy. To show our commitment to the village, we are planning a full store refit to commence very soon, ensuring we can provide an even better shopping experience while maintaining the essential services residents rely on.”

Rob O’Brien, Senior Business Agent – Retail & Leisure at Christie & Co, who managed the sale process said, “This was a particularly attractive opportunity due to the combination of a strong village convenience store and a high‑quality residential property. The buyers acted quickly to get this business as they knew interest would be high.

“With demand driven by experienced buyers looking for well‑trading businesses in busy residential markets. This sale reflects the ongoing strength of buyer appetite for convenience retail businesses that offer genuine trading potential.”

Funding for the acquisition was sourced through Michael Colledge at Christie Finance, who adds, “I was delighted to arrange funding for my client’s acquisition of this freehold convenience store. It was a pleasure working with Rob and all parties involved to achieve a smooth completion and wish my clients every success with the business.”

Newbottle Foodstore & Post Office was sold for an undisclosed sum, off a freehold asking price of £500,000.
