Sale of 34 Whitworths pharmacies concludes with Rotherham branch purchase
Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has concluded the sale of 34 pharmacies across the North of England on behalf of the shareholders of Whitworth Chemists Limited.

John Whitworth started his pharmacy business in 1967 and, after stepping out of wholesaling, established a new pharmacy chain, Whitworth Chemists Limited, in 1999. Since then, the chain has remained family-owned. The group traded from 34 community and health centre pharmacies located across the North of England - stretching from Blackpool in the West to Skegness in the East, and up to Newcastle in the North East. Across the portfolio, the average dispensing volume was circa 8,500 items per month, with volumes ranging from 3,000 items to 22,000 items.
After a strategic review by the family shareholders, who were looking to retire, the decision was taken to sell the business.
Following an openly marketed sales process with Jon Booth and Tom Young at Christie & Co, which achieved 118 offers from 83 different parties, the group has been sold to a mix of corporate operators, multi-site operators, and first-time buyers.
The final branch, on Broom Lane in Rotherham, which has been sold to multi-site operator, Broomlane Pharma Limited, concluded the portfolio sale.

Having first marketed the full portfolio of trading sites in November 2023, it has been a journey to get to this point, but we have found new homes for a very varied group of pharmacy businesses serving many different communities across a wide area of Northern England and with the full range of dispensing volumes and trading characteristics. This project will certainly be remembered for a very long time by me and my colleague, Tom, who was instrumental in the process. We wish the retiring owners the very best and all of the new owners the very greatest success in their acquisitions.”
The Whitworths portfolio was sold for an undisclosed price.
