Set on the banks of the River Taw on a six-acre site, the hotel is situated in the heart of the stunning North Devon countryside, amongst the scenic landscape of the Tarka Trail. The main hotel features parts dating back to the 1800s and comprises 22 ensuite bedrooms, a luxury two-bedroom self-catering tree house, restaurant, bar and its own fishing beat.
The Fox & Hounds Country Hotel has been owned by Nick and Tara Culverhouse since 2008 and came to market in order for the couple to focus more time on their other successful business, the Mill End Hotel in Chagford.
Since purchasing the Fox & Hounds Hotel, the couple have worked hard to not only improve the fabric of the building but the business’ trading performance, establishing several profitable income streams, including accommodation, weddings, events and the restaurant. As a result, the Fox & Hounds has earned itself an excellent reputation and won numerous awards, including ‘Best Dog Friendly Hotel Devon 2018’ for Luxe Pets Guide.
Nick Culverhouse comments, “We have had fourteen amazing years at the Fox & Hounds, and it has been a real roller coaster of a ride and none more so than the past 18 months. A special thanks to all the brilliant people we have worked alongside during this time. We are sure that Matt & Helen will take the hotel onto the next level, and we wish them every success in the future.”
The business has been purchased by experienced business owners, Helen Walker-Lane and Matthew Lane, who look forward to building on Nick and Tara’s success.
“We fell in love with the Fox and Hounds on our first visit and we are delighted to have the opportunity to shepherd the ongoing growth and development of this beautiful property”, says Helen Walker-Lane. “The hotel and grounds still have enormous potential and we’re incredibly excited to begin investing in our vision for the future of the hotel.”
Stephen Champion, Director in Christie & Co’s Hospitality team, who brokered the sale, comments, “We are delighted to have brokered the sale of the Fox & Hounds Country Hotel, having originally sold the hotel to Nick and Tara 14 years ago. The hotel sits in a prime position in the centre of the stunning Devon Countryside and is perfectly placed to take advantage of the ‘staycation boom’ that Devon is currently enjoying. We have no doubt Helen and Matthew’s prior business experience will stand them in good stead to make a success of this new venture.”
