Green Gables, one of Scarborough's oldest hotels, is on the market

The hotel was originally built as Scarborough Hydropathic Establishment at a cost of nearly £10,000 in 1889 by Professor Wells.  The current owners are Nick, Julie and Nicola, who are great grandchildren of local businessman Robert C Hopper who purchased the building in the 1920s. 

The hotel is located in the Falsgrave area of Scarborough, less than a mile away from the railway station and the beach. It retains many of its original features, and formerly offered a variety of baths such as Turkish and Russian.  Currently, families who enjoy seaside holidays as well as school and church groups are the hotel’s main clientele.

The present day letting accommodation consists of 20 apartments, 24 ensuite rooms, function rooms and an indoor pool, bar and games rooms. The accommodation is set over four storeys and includes a variety of function and dining spaces.  A three storey house adjoins the property and is divided into two apartments.  Externally, the site has two car parks with 10 spaces to the front and 15 at the rear.

The building may also appeal to developers; planning consent for its demolition as well as the redevelopment of the site into residential units has already been granted.

Whilst it has been part of our family for most of its existence, with our retirement looming, we are sure it will offer the perfect opportunity for any prospective purchasers to either further develop it as a hotel or redevelop it completely.”

The Green Gables Hotel is on the market freehold at an asking price of £899,995.
